The Port of Mombasa is Kenya’s primary seaport and one of the busiest in East Africa. FCL transit: 21-28 days. LCL transit: 25-35 days. RoRo available for vehicles and machinery.

Air Freight to Kenya

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi is the primary cargo hub. Transit: 2-5 days. Best for high-value, perishable, and urgent cargo.

Costs Overview

  • Air freight: 4-6x more expensive per kg than sea freight
  • Import duties: 0-25% under EAC Common External Tariff
  • VAT: 16%
  • Additional levies: Railway Development Levy, Import Declaration Fee
  • Insurance: 0.5-2% of goods value

Documentation Required

  • Import Declaration Form (IDF) — mandatory, valid 90 days
  • Bill of Lading / Airway Bill
  • Commercial Invoice
  • Packing List
  • Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC)
  • Certificate of Origin
  • KEBS certification where applicable

Customs Procedures

  1. Pre-arrival processing via KRA’s iCMS system
  2. Arrival and manifest filing
  3. Electronic customs declaration
  4. Assessment and verification
  5. Duty payment
  6. Release and delivery

Important: Goods uncollected for 21+ days may be auctioned by KRA.
